Chicago: Cellar Door Provisions

My sister had two weeks off after taking her Step 2 exam.  When she told me she was going to meet up with her friends in Denver for a weekend, I finagled my way into her vacation plans and somehow added Chicago and New Orleans to the itinerary.  We went to Chicago first for a few days, picked up CK then continued on to New Orleans before splitting to go our respective ways.

Our flight landed in Chitown close to midnight.  There was time for a late night chocolate chip cookie (freshly baked by CK) and then it was off to bed.

We started off the next day at Cellar Door Provisions:

Located in Logan Square, Cellar Door Provisions is a bit of everything.  It's a bakery, it's a cafe, it's a restaurant, it's whatever you need it to be:

We were there strictly for the baked goods.  Everything in the selection had an interesting (hipster) twist to it.  Such as the rhubarb, buckwheat, and sprouted groat upside down cake ($3.25):

The cake itself was very dense yet quite moist while the rhubarb was tangy and sweet.  I liked it, but I definitely couldn't finish a whole slice by myself.

We also got a kouign amann ($4) and a cannele ($3):

The texture of the kouign amann was buttery, flaky perfection, but the orange blossom (which was the flavor of the day) was a bit too floral for me.  The cannele, on the other hand, hit the mark in both sweetness and texture.  The outside as crunchy, while the inside was soft, eggy perfection.

My favorite, however, was the basic old bread and butter ($3):

I would take bread and butter over pastries any day.

Cellar Door Provisions sure knows how to bake.  Not only do they execute everything well, they also manage to put their own unique spin on it.

Definitely a good place to sit and unwind...or sit and focus on work.  Whatever you need.
