Sonoma County: Big Bottom Market
The third day of our staycation found us at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserves. I made the mistake of giving my sister the task of determining which trail to take. Instead of the simple three mile loop I was envisioning, my sister led my family on a six mile excursion up and down mountains.
Thanks, boo.
After the unexpectedly rigorous hike, we caught our breath with a tour of Korbel Champagne Cellars. We managed to make it back to town just in time to slip into Big Bottom Market right before they closed at 5:00pm:
The staff was already cleaning up the kitchen:
But they let us place our orders with the condition that we get everything to-go. Not a problem.
We got the mascarpone and honey biscuit ($5) for a sweet kick:
We also ordered three sandwiches, all of which came with side salads. The ham and cheddar biscuit ($10) was warm and comforting:
My favorite might have been the prosciutto and fig ciabatta sandwich ($13):
Gotta love the garlic aioli and fig jam:
I mean, come on. That burst of sweetness? Perfection.
But wait. I also loved the lumber jack ($12):
It was made with roast beef, shallot jam, jack cheese, arugula, and horseradish aioli on ciabatta:
That shallot jam tho. THAT SHALLOT JAM THO.
The woman who took our order was super friendly. Even though she asked us to order everything to-go, she told us we were more than welcome to dine in. (They just didn't want to wash more dishes.) When we insisted on eating back at our Airbnb because we felt bad about keeping them from closing on time, she walked us outside.
She also gave us three biscuits for free:
Apparently Big Bottom Market's biscuits are one of Oprah's favorite things. Besides the classic "The Biscuit," they also offer a daily selection of specialty biscuits ($3.75 each). The day we went they had banana chocolate and roasted pepper and onions. While we were waiting for our order, we noticed that you can buy biscuits from the previous day for $1. We initially planned on buying a couple day-old biscuits to have for breakfast the next morning. But when we walked up to the counter to purchase them, our new best friend told us just to take them.
We didn't know what flavors we got until we cut them open the next day. We ended up getting two jalapeno cheese biscuits and a strawberry one.
Big Bottom Market biscuits are fluffy and buttery and just flat out delicious. (Oprah knows her stuff.) Their sandwiches are no joke either. If you're in the area and looking for an affordable meal, I highly recommend stopping by. And while you're there, don't forget to check out their mini market filled with artisanal goods!
